Stakeholder consultation on exemptions from the substance restrictions in electrical and electronic equipment (RoHS Directive)


This stakeholder consultation ran for twelve weeks from 19.08.2013 to 11.11.2013 and covered five exemption requests:

Exemption request 2013-1 "Lead as thermal stabilizer in Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC) used as base for substrates in amperometric, potentiometric and conductometric electrochemical sensors"

Exemption request 2013-2 "Cadmium in color converting II-VI LEDs (< 10 μg Cd per mm2 of light-emitting area) for use in solid state illumination or display systems" (Request for renewal of Exemption 39 of Annex III of Directive 2011/65/EU)

Exemption request 2013-3 "Lead in solders used in boards of heart-lung machines" exemption to expire in 2017

Exemption request 2013-4 "Mercury used in high speed rotating electrical connectors (slip ring) with  electrical conduction paths that have sealed liquid mercury, molecularly bonded to the contacts”

Exemption request 2013-5 "Cadmium in light control materials used for display devices"

Results of the consultation and next steps

Unconfidential information submitted during the consultation will be posted on the EU CIRCA website (Browse categories > European Commission > Environment > RoHS 2012 Exemptions Review, at top left, click on "Library"). Further exchange with stakeholders will be held after the consultation has ended for those issues where further need for information and / or need for (technical) discussion has been identified.

  • Public administrations
