Request for renewal: Mercury in other discharge lamps for special purposes not specifically mentioned in this Annex (Annex III n. 4(f)-I: expires on 24 February 2025)

This exemption applies to discharge lamps that operate at medium or high internal pressure and that do not have a fluorescent layer. In general, this type of lamp is used in areas where a high luminous flux is generated in a small space. Under these conditions, the use of LED technology and the market availability of alternatives have been limited. Based on previous studies and stakeholder comments, the Commission officially published the renewed exemption 4(f) with a differentiated scope and updated expiry dates on 24 February 2022:

• (I) Mercury in other discharge lamps for special purposes not specifically mentioned in this Annex (expires on 24 February 2025)
• (II) Mercury in high pressure mercury vapour lamps used in projectors where an output ≥ 2000 lumen ANSI is required (expires on 24 February 2027)
• (III) Mercury in high pressure sodium vapour lamps used for horticulture lighting (expires on 24 February 2027)
• (IV) Mercury in lamps emitting light in the ultraviolet spectrum (expires on 24 February 2027)
