Request for renewal: Mercury in melt pressure transducers for capillary rheometers at temperatures over 300 °C and pressures over 1 000 bar (Annex IV n.49, expires on 31 December 2025)
This exemption relates to melt pressure transducers for capillary rheometers at very high temperature and pressure. Due to specific material properties, mercury is used as a filling in the pressure transducer of the capillary rheometer to transmit the pressure of the probe to a sensor outside the high temperature and pressure area. In the previous evaluation, two potential substitutes were identified, but they were not applicable under the specific pressure and temperature conditions. Against this background, the exemption was considered justified. However, at the time of the previous evaluation, a company had already announced that it would push ahead with the development of mercury-free media.
